In behavioral health, trust is the product.
Any leader considering AI at the front door should ask hard questions. The people reaching out are vulnerable, and some are in danger. Safety cannot be a feature added at the end. It has to be the foundation.
These are the questions we think every program should put to any vendor, including us.
A safe system listens for signs of crisis from the first moments of a conversation, not only when a screening question comes up. Ask how it recognizes risk, and what it does in the next ten seconds.
When a conversation needs a human, it should move to a warm transfer to a clinician or on call staff, and follow your own protocol for crisis resources such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Ask the vendor to walk you through the escalation path out loud.
People should be told when they are speaking with an AI assistant. Trust that begins with a surprise does not last.
AI at the front door should not diagnose, prescribe, or promise coverage. Its job is to listen, inform, capture what it learns, and connect the person to your team.
Behavioral health information is among the most sensitive a person can share. Ask about HIPAA compliance, business associate agreements, and exactly how data is stored and used.
A retail chatbot with a new script is not a behavioral health tool. Ask who built it and what it was trained on. Our AI and our HeadsUp™ guidance are built on frameworks clinicians already trust, including motivational interviewing, AIDET, and the Stages of Change, because most people who reach out are still undecided, and that ambivalence is not an obstacle to the conversation. It is the conversation.
Most calls, and every admission, still happen live with a person. The right role for AI is to answer when no one can and to support your team when someone does. An answering service takes a message. A well designed system has a real conversation, captures what was said, and hands your counselor a warm start in the morning instead of a list of missed calls.
A vendor who takes safety seriously will welcome every one of these questions. They will name their escalation path without being asked, show you how the system handles a hard conversation and not only an easy one, and tell you plainly what the AI will not do.
It takes courage to reach out. The first thing a person meets should be worthy of that.
